Posh Spice Indian Restaurant in Newtown, Sydney

Looking for a good Indian restaurant in Sydney?
Bollywood ‘Posh’ and ‘ Spiced’ just right
The other ‘Posh Spice’ is unlikely to have ever climbed the stairs of this ‘Posh Spice’ in Newtown. Doubly unlikely because Sydney’s ‘Posh Spice’ is about food, fun and good times and one wonders just how much of that is in Victoria’s life.

‘Posh Spice’ is a refreshing addition to the usual Indian restaurants in and around Sydney (and Melbourne for that matter).  At ‘Posh Spice’  they are serving up not only a very interesting array of Northern and Southern Indian cuisine but they are making an event of it.  Bollywood abounds in this tastefully funky and generously proportioned venue with wide screen televisions playing the best of these genre films and on busy nights patrons take to the dance floor whoop it up and  join in the ‘Bollywood’ dancing.

On our visit things were a little quieter as the locals were elsewhere absorbed in the non Indian pastime of a footy match giving us the opportunity to enjoy our ‘Slumdog Margarita’ and a ‘Bollywood Mojito’ cocktails and complimentary appetizers of deep fried bread, spread with three types of cheeses, while perusing a very interesting and diverse menu.

Our first entree of Tilly Prawn Cutlets ($14) were large and nicely barbequed and was followed by the ‘Posh’ Platter ($22) that was well cooked and very typical of an ‘Indian’ platter.

Always believe one can judge a restaurant on the quality of their bread (or in this case naan) the Peshwari Naan ($4) was stuffed with lots of nuts,  soft,  plump and some of the best we have had.

We did want to try their signature dish ‘Cootamundra Kid Goat’ but it’s popularity had depleted supply so decided on the Mustard Fish ($18).  This dish was very well presented in a green coconut shell holding creamy fish fillets cooked in coconut extract, mustard, a little tumeric, with a squeeze of lime and was delicious.

Doubtful as to whether to indulge further the sound of the Gulab Jaman, that are little dumplings made from reduced milk and served with cardamom flavoured syrup ($6) induced us to at least share one – we weren’t sorry – nice finish.

‘Aja’, a new wine blend from the Hunter Valley being promoted as an accompaniment to Asian food, was recommended and complimented the meal very nicely.

This would be a great place to get the troops together and make a night of it but be sure to book ahead for groups as ‘Posh Spice’ is becoming very popular.
