The Island Bar on Cockatoo Island - serves up a unique cocktail
The Island Bar on Cockatoo Island in the middle of Sydney Harbour is open again for the 2011/2012 summer season – yippee! The re-opening party had all the ingredients to make any summer party swing – great food, yummo cocktails, cool music by the Afro Nomad, one of the most stunning views in the world and a lovely relaxed feel.
Sydney Harbour is one of the globes most fantastic environments and being on Cockatoo Island enjoying some wonderful hospitality by mixologist and 2010 Bartender of the Year, Marco Faraone, ranks very highly on the MiSociety scale of what Sydney really is about. Sure the weatherman let us down this night by introducing summer in Sydney with an Arctic blast and the wardrobe choices of a few guests left them shivering. But those dressed accordingly partied on electing to forego the supplied water taxis and to wait for the last ferry back to Circular Quay.
Cockatoo Island still bears the remains of its ship building days with its cavernous buildings and rusting metal monoliths. The Island Bar, constructed from re-cycled shipping containers and using old cable reels as tables, fits in perfectly to not only serve up great cocktails and delicous food but to add some good old fashioned charm.
Sydney is becoming spoilt for choice when it comes to entertainment venues but we know where we will be heading with friends, both local and off shore, the next time we are seeking a deck chair in the open air on a lazy afternoon where we can just hang about and marvel as the sun sinks into our stunning harbour.
