Wild Oats X1 is one of the world’s fastest and most technologically advanced ocean racing yachts and as she lined up for the starter’s gun for the 2011 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race her loyal supporters gathered for a party to cheer her on.
The Wild Oats Boxing Day BBQ party was created by Robert Oatley Wines, owners of ‘Wild Oats x1’ , some years ago and it is now legendary in Sydney. Being held at The Armory at The Gap Bluff Centre, Watson’s Bay, we were afforded an amazing crow’s nest view of the start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race
It was a real family day for 2011 where Robert Oatley Wines’ customers, yachty friends , invited media and celebrities joined forces to spur on Wild Oats x1 on her attempt to take out line honours for the sixth time in her last seven Sydney to Hobart starts.
As the 2011 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race starter’s gun cracked guests rushed to the cliff top to watch the race progress up the harbour before taking the trek up and over the headland to cheer on from the other side. This was no mean feat for some as they balanced wine glasses up the mountainside steps dodging and weaving around the overhanging bushes.
While not being strictly a ‘BBQ’ this year, no-one seemed fazed, as, with appetites sharpened by the excitement (and exertion) of the race’s beginnings, they tucked into the particularly good fare from Hugo’s Catering that was complimented by the selection of ‘Wild Oats’ Wines that continued to flow all afternoon.
David Koch, the ever affable Channel 7 star, was in excellent form along with his Sunrise co-host Melissa Doyle, who was accompanied by her son Nick. Zoe Ventura was absolutely glowing in the light of her current beau Daniel MacPherson with celebrity chef, Peter Kuruvita, enjoying some time out fun with his family.
Michael Pell, the youthful Channel 7 ‘ Sunrise’ Executive Producer, joined other VIP guests including Catriona Rowntree and Delicious Magazine Editor Trudi Jenkins on the deck of The Armory to lazily enjoy a relaxed, friendly and highly enjoyable Boxing Day 2011.
As we go to publication it has been formally announced that Wild Oats x1 was pipped at the post for line honours in 2011 by ‘Investec Loyal’ in one of the most riveting and tightest ever finishes of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
